Isolated and tonic-based qualities
This section deals with the fundamental basis for melodic and harmonic qualities: the qualities of melodic notes and isolated inversions. Such skills can then be applied to the tonic harmony, with tonic-based melodic dictation, and an understanding of I & I6.
  • Overview  ( 1 items )
Some general pages on the system of melodic dictation used on this site.
  • Consonant melodic qualities  ( 14 items )
The root, third, and fifth of a chord may be taken for granted, but their use can have a huge impact on the effect of a work.
  • Dissonant melodic qualities  ( 20 items )
This area explores the emotive qualities of the unstable notes to a chord.
  • Inversions of isolated chords  ( 13 items )
Inversions of isolated chords are taught through an understanding of the pulls of isolated chords. Students learn by association of prominent uses of such inversions in harmonic contexts (e.g., a second inversion chord is associated with the sound of the cadential 6/4).
